Environmental Stewardship

Whirlpool Corporation currently measures the amount of waste generated, water consumed and energy used by their manufacturing facilities in the production of appliances. They also track the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated from their manufacturing facilities and from the use of their products.

An internal cross-departmental Corporate Environmental Council is responsible for supporting the company's global efforts to comply with environmental policy requirements. The Council creates, updates and continuously improves the policy and the mechanisms and processes that enable compliance.

In 2007, Whirlpool Corporation’s manufacturing facilities worldwide produced 401,805 metric tonnes of waste. Of this, nearly 90 percent was recycled. Total waste produced by the company’s manufacturing operations increased in 2006 due to the acquisition of Maytag Corporation.

While Whirlpool agrees that certification against international standards is worthwhile, Whirlpool employs its own compliance audit process. This process is based on the Whirlpool Corporation EHS Global Standards that assess the same environmental risks as the ISO 14001, and the same health and safety criteria as the OHSAS 18001. The ISO is an international standards organization and the 14001 certification series addresses environmental management systems. OHSAS 18001 is an international occupational health and safety management system specification.

The Whirlpool audit process also uses auditors who are experts in the EHS field within the home appliance industry. The audit process focuses on EHS management systems, performance and compliance to the Whirlpool EHS Global Standards and local legal requirements. In addition to the Whirlpool audit process, a number of locations participate in independent audits in conjunction with ISO or OHSAS requirements. Approximately 25 percent of Whirlpool manufacturing facilities have achieved certification to ISO 14001 and/or OHSAS 18001.

Whirlpool received the 2009 ENERGY STAR® Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This special award is given to a select group of organizations that exhibit outstanding environmental leadership year after year, while sustaining product and marketing excellence. This unique honor represents Whirlpool's fourth consecutive Sustained Excellence Award and their tenth overall ENERGY STAR Award win.

Front-loading: front-load washing machines typically use 40-60% less water and 30-50% less energy than top loaders and have the benefit of faster spin times, which means your clothes dry faster.

Front & top-load options
ENERGY STAR labeled washers are available with the front or top load option. ENERGY STAR labeled front-loaders tumble clothes through a small amount of water instead of rubbing clothes against an agitator in a full tub while ENERGY STAR labeled advanced top loaders use sophisticated wash systems to flip or spin clothes through a reduced stream of water. Although the front loader is more efficient, both designs dramatically reduce the amount of hot water used in the wash cycle, and the energy used to heat it.
Efficient motor systems
ENERGY STAR labeled washers feature efficient motors, which spin clothes two to three times faster during the spin cycle to extract more water. Less moisture in the clothes means less time in the dryer and less energy used.

Low Water Factor (WF)

Water Factor (WF) measures water efficiency in gallons of water consumed per cubic foot of capacity. The lower the WF, the more water-efficient the clothes washer.

High Modified Energy Factor (MEF)

Water level, temperature & spin options

Choose a washing machine that allows you to adjust the water level to match the size of load you require - this will help you only use as much water and energy as you need.
Look for a washer that includes cold, warm and hot water temperatures so you can wash mostly with cold water and only with warm and hot water when absolutely necessary (water heating consumes about 90% of the energy it takes to operate a clothes washer).
A washer with a high spin speed option will allow your not-as-delicate clothes to spin at a high speed, making them less wet and reducing the amount of time they will need to spend in the dryer.

Front-loading

Front-loading machines are, in general, more efficient than their top-loading counterparts, using 40-60% less water and 30-50% less energy. They also have the benefit of faster spin times, which means your clothes dry faster.

Right size

While a larger model will hold more clothes, it will also use more water and energy. On the other hand, a model that is too small will require a lot more clothes washing. Mid-size washers are your best bet to achieve high performance and efficiency.

Maximize the performance of your washer

Operate only with full loads.
If possible, change the level of water or load level depending on how many clothes you need to wash.
Wash in cold water (water heating consumes about 90% of the energy it takes to operate a clothes washer).
Activate the high spin speed option (to reduce the amount of remaining moisture in your clothes after washing, thereby decreasing the amount of time it takes your clothes to dry).
Use biodegradable, high efficiency detergent.
