ISO 14001

What is ISO 14001?

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards. The ISO 14001 standard provides an internationally recognized and respected framework for the implementation of an organization's Environmental Management System (EMS). An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a set of processes and practices that enable an organization to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. An organization that meets the requirements of ISO 14001 is one that has an EMS, which is designed to:

  • Identify and control the environmental impact of the organization's activities, products or services
  • Continually improve the organization's environmental performance
  • Implement a systematic approach to:
    • Set environmental objectives and targets; achieve these and demonstrate that they have been achieved

Fulfilling the requirements of ISO 14001 demands objective evidence, which can be audited to demonstrate that the EMS is operating effectively.

Organizations that are ISO 14001 certified have committed to comply with and continually improve their EMS.
